You Can’t Treat What You Can’t See: Uncovering Infection with Point-of-Care Bacterial Fluorescence Imaging

This event is free of charge and approved for 1 CE/CME/CECH credit hour for DPMs, Nurses and Physicians.

High levels of bacteria impede wound healing. A recent study revealed that more than 80% of chronic wounds with high bacterial burden are misdiagnosed when clinicians relied solely on clinical signs and symptoms of infection. Swab cultures are also inaccurate and getting results can take time. The practice of wound care needs an accurate point-of-care method of detecting bacteria presences in chronic wounds. In this webinar, Dr Serena will describe the use of bacterial fluorescence imaging to detect bacterial burden at point-of-care, leading to more effective wound management and antimicrobial stewardship.

Lecture Objectives: 1. Discuss the role elevated bacterial burden has on impeding wound healing 2. Describe why clinical signs and symptoms of infection are inadequate indicators of bacterial burden. 3. Demonstrate how bacterial fluorescence imaging detects high levels of bacteria at point-of-care 4. Discuss the importance of incorporating fluorescence imaging into the management of bacterial burden in your patients with chronic wounds.
